Tom is a business appraiser and private investor. He is the Founder of Higgins, Marcus & Lovett, Inc., a business valuation firm he co founded in 1980. The firm values closely held, family businesses for a variety of purposes, including estate and gift tax, estate planning, eminent domain, employee stock options and litigation support. He has testified as an expert in Superior Courts, Federal Courts and the United States Tax Court in over one hundred valuation matters.
Tom earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Southern California and his M.B.A. from Pepperdine University. He served on the faculty of the Graduate School of Business at Pepperdine, where he taught finance in the MBA program.
Tom's community activities include the Jonathan Club, where he was a past President; Idyllwild School of the Arts, where he was Chair of the Audit Committee; Huntington Medical Research Institute, where he was Vice Chairman; The Economic Roundtable, where he was a past President; and Pepperdine University, where he was a member of the University Board.
Karen is a former equity partner at Loeb & Loeb LLP where she served as the National Chair of the Real Estate Department, the Office Managing Partner for the downtown Los Angeles office, and a member of the firm's Strategic Planning Committee. Karen practiced law for 18 years and earned numerous awards for her work as a lawyer. She was named one of the "Top Women Lawyers in Business of 2003", a "Southern California Super Lawyer" in 2005, and was named among the "Women Making a Difference" by the Los Angeles Business Journal in 2006. Karen's practice as a real estate lawyer included advising financial institutions, real estate investment trusts, insurance and investment companies and individuals in complex real estate matters. Prior to becoming a lawyer, Karen was Vice President of Acquisitions and Administration at a real estate development firm.
Karen received her undergraduate degree from Azusa Pacific University, graduating magna cum laude and received her J.D. degree from Loyola Law School, where she graduated cum laude and became a member of the Order of the Coif.
Karen is a former Trustee for the Idyllwild School of the Arts, and served as a board member for the City of Hope Los Angeles Real Estate Council. Karen is currently writing books including a training manual for young lawyers.
Tom and Karen enjoy hiking, bicycling, skiing, sailing, travel, music, art, and entertaining in their home. They also enjoy learning, growing and exploring new areas of study outside of law and business.
